Inspiration
Pre-Columbian Nariño Culture
The Nariño culture in the Andean highlands of Colombia and northern Ecuador is distinguished by its geometric ornaments, ceremonial disks with hypnotic patterns, and expertise in weaving cotton and plant fibers. They also excelled in Piartal-Tuza goldsmithing, crafting intricate items. The objects they manufactured were used as a method of communication with their gods.
Nariño disks
These circular objects, adorned with geometric patterns and various metal finishes, were suspended and spun from the center to create mesmerizing light effects during ceremonies and rituals, inducing altered states of mind and hypnosis in the participants.
Project goal
"Movimento Di Oro" is a creative partnership between Italy's renowned ALESSI, known for its sophisticated housewares, and Bogotá's Pontifical Xavierian University. The project sought to blend pre-Colombian cultural artifacts with ALESSI's signature design language, creating a distinctive product line that unites Colombian heritage with Italian craftsmanship.

Alessi company analysis
Extensive research involving the brand's mission, design team, products, and materials was conducted to gain a thorough understanding. The aesthetic was analyzed, drawing inspiration from the philosophy of transforming functional objects into small pieces of art.
Prototyping
Analog
For the analog exploration phase, several prototypes were developed, utilizing cardboard coated with clay and MDF materials. These prototypes served as a hands-on approach to assess and refine the dimensions and overall form of the set.

* MDF painted with white acrylic and vinyl sticker on top
Digital
For the digital exploration phase, 3D models were developed using both SolidWorks and Blender. SolidWorks was primarily used to create precise, technical models that allowed for detailed dimensional accuracy. Meanwhile, Blender was utilized to smooth and subdivide the forms and rendering.
